Summary of Municipal Round Table Discussion: Identifying Current Urban Governance Issues
Under the Australian Government – The Asia Foundation Strategic Partnership to support Subnational Governance in Nepal, implementing partner COMMITTED facilitated a two-day Municipal Round Table Discussion (RTD) featuring Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and Chief Administrative Officers of 11 partner municipalities from 18 – 19 December 2017 with the agenda of identifying current urban governance issues. Along with the municipal officials, the RTD also saw participation from other senior municipal officials, governance advisors, and relevant stakeholders. This report summarizes the key insights and proposals generated from the RTD and discusses:
- The municipalities’ achievements and shortfalls in these early days of Nepal’s transition to federalism;
- Their priority action areas to move forward;
- The needs and challenges that the municipalities must address; and
- Anticipated constraints expected to impede efforts to address those needs and challenges.
